Angels

about

Angels was first written one weekend as I was camping unplugged in the woods at a small festival. By the end of that weekend, I decided that it just didn't move me, and I tore the lyrics out of my notebook, crumpled them up, and tossed them in my trash. I throw away more than half of what I write - if it doesn't make me cry or laugh out loud as I am writing it, then it is not a true song. I want to write True songs, and Angels did not ring true with me. As I left the campground and connected with all things internet the following Monday, I heard about the senseless slaughter in Las Vegas that had occurred that weekend - all those souls lost to a madman. In a moment, the second verse was written - My angels lay me down like a bullet in my chest. I dug through my trash bag which had not yet been tossed, and found the heart of the song that had been missing.

Angels © 10/2017 G. LaMonte

My angels worry me like a stone in my shoe
My angels worry me like a stone in my shoe
Til’ I get right with them, ain’t nothing I can do
My angels worry me

My angels lay me down like a bullet in my chest
My angels lay me down like a bullet in my chest
So weary of this world – just lookin’ for some rest
My angels lay me down

CHORUS:
Now, I can’t fly … I can’t fly … I can’t fly … away
I can’t fly … Wish I could fly … I can’t fly … but I can pray

My angels hold me fast like a lover in a storm
My angels hold me fast like a lover in a storm
Might be an angel, too; but, oh, my wings are torn
My angels hold me fast

My angels carry me when I can’t get off the ground
My angels carry me when I can’t get off the ground
Someday I’ll fly again; yeah, it all comes around
My angels carry me

CHORUS

My angels carry me
