That's Not the Moon

about

Oh, yes, about that idea that inspiration does not always lead where you think that it will. I settled into my cabin late the first night of a festival, exhausted and ready to dream. I threw my sleeping bag on the bunk, turned out the lights, climbed in and closed my eyes. Oh, the very full moon was shining so brightly in the window right beside me, that I just couldn't sleep. It was the moon, so I figured it would move in a few minutes. But it did not. Then I remembered that there was no full moon that night. I climbed out of the bunk, opened the door and peered out at the giant parking lot light shining harshly through the trees. Perhaps I did not sleep that night after all. But I did have my guitar and my deep sorrow with the realization of love that was never really love.

That’s Not the Moon
© LaMonte 5/2017

There’s a light in my window that shines like the moon
But that's not the moon
There’s a flame in my heart that burns just like you
But that's not you

What does it say when your world fades away
And everything that you do
Looks like your love but it ain’t
And that’s not the moon – That’s not the moon

There’s a smile on your face and I can see it from here
Baby, that’s not your smile
And I know how this goes and we’ll both be alone
In a little while

What does it say when the colors all fade
Till your whole world ain’t nothin’ but blue
It still looks like your love but it ain’t
And that’s not the moon – That’s not the moon

Bridge:
That’s not the light I remember – the light that I know
The light that shines under your skin
Not the feelin’ I felt when I didn’t know
Where you ended and where I begin

There’s a light in the sky and it looks like the sun
But that can’t be the sun
Because if it was, you’d think it’d be shinin’
On everyone

What does it say when your world fades away
And everything that you do
Looks like your love, but it ain’t
And that’s not the moon – That’s not the moon
