about

Written the week BEFORE The First Annual Lake Okeechobee Summer Solstice Festival ... I write a lot of true stories before they happen.

lyrics

The Day the Pagans Came to Town
G. LaMonte (6/2013)

The beauty of Big Waters, gators in tall grass
Sugar cane and tangerines, and sunshine by the glass
The realm of Okeechobee, Oh, there’s magic in the wind
Feather, scale, tooth and claw, and 6,000 some souls prayin’ on the rim

A quiet town of peaceful folk who worshiped their own God
They honored hearth and family, abiding by their laws
Nothin’ changed in their sweet world, they lived it day by day
Till the story broke, the headline shout, “Pagans on the way!”

The sun, the toads, the mosquitoes, the flies, the wind, the gators
The evening news, the payday blues, the lies and instigators
The evil in the world is wide, we suffer and we frown
But nothin’ like this final plague, the day the Pagans came to town

The preachers of Pahokee cried, “They’ve come to flood the town,
The Okeechobee Lake will rise, and everyone shall drown.
Hide your sons and daughters, for there’s belly-dancin’ here.
We prophecy the sky will fall, there’s everything to fear.”

The Pagans smiled and pitched their tents and lit their sacred fire
They cast their circle, arms so wide; their hearts were open wider
They kissed the earth, they kissed the sky, no waters risin’ here
They welcomed tribe, they welcomed town – there’s room for God and Goddess here.

The drums, the heathens, magic spells, the runes, the bones, sarongs
They sing and dance, they dream and trance. What else could go wrong?
The evil in this world is wide, we fear what we don’t know
This Pagan plague’s upon us, Gods above and Gods below.

Evening fell and drums rang out, joyous was the cry
Fullest moon they ever saw, and summer solstice tides
The Pagans watched the townsfolk as they found that sacred space
Heartbeats joined in rhythm on the shores of this great lake

The beauty of Big Waters, gators in tall grass
Sugar cane and tangerines, and sunshine by the glass
In the realm of Okeechobee there is magic in the wind
Pahokee and the Pagans – celebratin’ on the rim

The sun, the toads, the mosquitoes, the flies, the wind, the gators
Don’t believe the evening news and all the things that plague us
In the realm of Okeechobee there is magic in the wind
Pahokee and the Pagans – they are dancin’ on the rim
