© 10/2014 G. LaMonte – written at Dragon Hills Samhein Festival 2014

Dead end, standin’ on a one-way street
Nothin’ risin’ but these blisters on my feet
The sun can’t reach my soul, and my heart has lost its beat

Can’t cry for Mama – she don’t know me anymore
Daddy’s ashes long been scattered off that shore
Feelin’ like an orphan, bitter to the core

Can’t get no darker, and I’ve never been so lost
When I feel her eyes upon me, and I’m measurin’ the cost
She’s starin’ through the screen door, and it’s clear she wants my soul
… The Empress down Rattlesnake Road

Her skin is black as coffee … and she can see right through (me)
She said, “I can hear your soul cry. I’ve been waitin’ here for you.
“When you’re ready to surrender, and that’s all that’s left to do.”

I sat and drank her sweet tea, while the flies buzzed all around.
Her fingers grazed my spirit, all bayou swamped and bound.
I gave myself to her many arms on this unfamiliar ground.

Can’t get no darker, and I’ve never been so lost.
When I feel her hands upon me, and the fire burns like frost.
She’s reachin’ deep inside me, and it’s clear she’ll take my soul.
… The Empress down Rattlesnake Road.

BRIDGE: I know this ain’t what you been hopin’.
I break the things that need to be broken.
I’m gonna crack your spirit wide open … and let the light shine.

She bathed me in that light as she remade (me)
Into all that was and was not … oh, I prayed
Until everything I was not fell away.

Then the Empress climbed right out of my head.
I cried, “Was it somethin’ I said?”
“Oh, child, you have outgrown my bed! For now …”

Can’t get no darker – never felt so damned alone.
She drank my tears and sorrow like honey from the comb.
Getting’ on with my life – she kept a piece of my soul.
I loved the Empress down Rattlesnake Road.
